First Day
Two weeks after I had arrived in Grand Junction I started on
Grand Junction High School. This was a very interesting
experience. I met with
my wonderful counselor and we put
together a schedule for me. The classes started at 7:25 in the
morning - which chocked me. I hate getting up early but I got
used to it.
First thing I noticed when I was at the school for the first
getting a tour of the campus was the lockers. It was exactly
like in the movies or like the European stereotype of high
schools. My locker came in handy for me and I learned to love
it.

My Class and Classes
I was put in the GJHS class of 2008 (class graduating in
2008). Since I was there during the school year 2006/2007 I was
a 11th grader (junior). I took a lot of interesting classes such
as Composition (English), World Literature, German, US History,
Law Related Education, Health and First Aid, Computer
Applications, Programming, Algebra II (Mathematics), Coed
Individual Development (Weights) and more.
The Grading System
One of the very remarkable things about the US High School
System is the grading/marking system. Everything is given in
credits, then in percentages and then in grade format (ex: A).
Grade

Percentage:

I was very fortuned to have the most wonderful teacher to
help me through year and I ended up with a GPA of 3.643. I got
10 A's, 3 B's and 1 C throughout the entire year. I was ranked
number 47 of 336 in my class. One important thing to notice is
that I have not gotten any of the credits earned in the
US transferred to Denmark.
School Spirit &
Sports
School Spirit & is a huge part of US high schools. Every
school has got different school colors. The colors of the Grand
Junction High School Tigers is of course Orange & Black - as a
real tiger. GJHS had a weekly spirit day where most people
dressed up in the school colors - Friday. Often Friday would
also be game day which means there would be a game in one of the
big sports in the evening. I remember one of my friends used say
the following lines up to big games
| "Do you know what time it
is? IT's GAME TIME!" |
When the evening comes and the games begin everybody dresses
out in their school colors. Students do it to show which team
they cheer for and what school their are from. There was a huge
rival between the schools in the valley - Grand Junction High
School, Central High School and Fruita Monument High School.
This rival between the schools is a big part of the high school
culture and therefore it has become a bigger of my memories. The
different football games, soccer games, basket ball games, etc.
will be some of the things I will look back on with a smile on
my face. The whole atmosphere of dedication to ones school team
is so amazing that I cannot describe it.
Year Books &
Graduation
As you might have seen in movies the day the year books are
released is an awesome day. At GJHS we all sat on the grass
outside the school and singed each others year books. It was
really cozy and the weather was perfect.
Another the weather was perfect was the day the seniors
graduated.
I would have loved to graduate myself but
unfortunately I was junior (11th grader), not a senior (12th
grader). My senior friends did graduate and I ran around to
different graduation parties. It was a lot of fun to experience. |
